Elmfield Road 1940

Thanks to Don Scott for this photo.

Don tells us that this was taken in 1940 on Elmfield Road when only the ‘Sinkers’ houses were there (so called because of the pit shaft sunk just a field away to the left of where the photo was taken). We are looking due west here and the road at that time became a path (which can be seen in the background) that lead through the fields all the way to the Farm.

The kids are sitting opposite No.13 where they were brought up. They are all members of the Brooke family which a year later included baby Margaret, who is now Don’s wife . Sadly, the little boy died shortly after the picture was taken.
