Hebburn Coal Trimmers

Coal Trimmers

Brilliant old photo of Coal Trimmers at Hebburn supplied by Len Stephenson.

Trimming was incredibly hard and skilled work in the holds of coal ships, In order to balance the ship, the coal was furiously leveled out by hand as it poured down from the rail wagons on the staiths above. (Note the specialised shovels) But was relatively well paid and the Trimmers had some status in the town.

Len’s dad (George Stephenson) is third from the right in the back row with his thumbs in his waistcoat.. His brother Bill is in the middle of the bottom row.
